About Dr. Knowles

I was born in Bangor, Maine in 1953, and attended public school in Ellsworth. Throughout school I was deeply involved in band and chorus, and also played on the Ellsworth High baseball team.

I always wanted to be a doctor. While attending a physiology class during my pre-med years at the University of Maine, I heard a professor say that the body has the ability to heal itself. This revelation sparked a desire to research ways to facilitate the natural process of healing.

I determined that I would rather have a medical practice that facilitates the body's self-healing rather than waiting until something is wrong and then attempting to fix it.

I graduated from the the pre-med program at the University of Maine in 1975 with a B.A. in Zoology, followed by a B.S. in Human Biology and a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from the National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, IIllinois. I married Mari Lee Olsen five days after graduation, and moved back to Maine in September 1982.

I continued my professional education with advanced certification as a Fellow of the American Society of Acupuncturists and a Diplomate of the American Academy of Chiropractic Acupuncturists.

Mount Desert Island is my favorite place in the world. I spent time here as a young adult, and when I had to choose a place to live, it was just a question of where on The Island I would settle. I began singing in the Acadia Choral Society in the fall of 1983, and have served on the board for nearly twenty years. My other hobbies include golf, motorcycling, bicycling, boating, hiking, skiing, and spinning.

Since 1983 I have been practicing chiropractic and chiropractic acupuncture in Bass Harbor, where I now live with my wife Mari, my daughter, Laura, my sons Brian and Jason, and our cats Caleb and Tabatha.
